Software and systems architecture

Whether a system carries you for five years or becomes a legacy burden after two is decided in its architecture. I design and build systems that hold up in operation — with modern Java and Jakarta EE, from the first draft to a running, operable solution.

What this is about

Most systems don't fail because of the code but because of their structure: modules that know everything about each other, data models that cannot carry the domain, and solutions nobody can operate. Good architecture means making the few decisions that will be expensive later early and deliberately — and deliberately leaving everything else open.

I don't advise from slides but from practice: over three decades of systems in healthcare, pharma and chemicals — among them database products, verification systems with hard performance requirements, and platforms that are still in production today. I don't just design, I also implement; that keeps my recommendations aligned with what actually works in operation.

Focus areas

Architecture and system design

From the domain data model to the shape of the system landscape: I help with architecture decisions that last — modular monolith or distributed services, synchronous or event-driven, build or buy. Without dogma, with clear reasoning, and with an eye on the team that will have to evolve the solution later.

Modern Java and Jakarta EE platforms

Java is the most reliable foundation for long-lived enterprise systems — when used in a modern way. I develop with current Java (records, virtual threads, pattern matching), Quarkus and Vaadin, and modernise existing Jakarta EE applications step by step without putting live operation at risk.

Backend and data platforms

APIs, persistence, multi-tenancy, performance: I build backends that deliver structured data reliably and fast — from database modelling through REST interfaces to versioning and traceability. Experience from data products where correctness and response times matter in equal measure.

Containerisation and operations

A solution is only finished once it can be operated: container images, CI/CD pipelines, systemd/Quadlet or Kubernetes, reverse proxy and TLS, health probes and monitoring. I deliver systems so that deployments and updates are routine — not events.

How I work

It usually starts with an honest assessment of the existing architecture and its actual pain points. Building on that, I clarify the target direction with you and can, where wanted, take on or accompany the implementation. I work AI-assisted (with Claude Code, among others) — faster and at higher quality, without giving up technical control.
